I've already bought the Ferrari but it only has a 2 litre engine - it would be silly to have a Ferrari and only have a 2 litre engine in it. Sure most people are fine with a 2 litre engine, but I already have the Ferrari.

I normally drive at 150kmh, but yeah my computer can do 400kmh.

On a side note, and removing the metaphor, with more ram I can run a vm image of XP in OSX.

Yes, XP, and yes, I usually use a machine with 512mb, and it is nicer, though I don't have any means to ascertain if that is the reason. I was just trying to make a point. The point being that you can get by with a pitiful amount of ram.

I just had a feeling this might be a case of buying a Ferrari and driving it around town, you know? Sure, you can theoretically do 400kmh*. Will you? I don't know, maybe you will. Personally, I'd probably get a bigger gain in productivity by learning a few shortcut keys but I'm too darn lazy to bother.

*Off topic, but now that I say that, I remember I went 220kmh once. Legally even.

News: The price of 4gb of ram has now just gone up to $959.99 USD.

Alex:
My estimate was including $30 USD for shipping and $120 USD for import tax which they think I will be charged. (that's GST isn't it?)

It's now much more than $1500 NZD... I should have got it while I had the chance :). It looks like it's around $1650 now. You were probably right with your estimate.

Eats '+' eh?

Razor:
Are you using XP? Have you used a faster machine / fast machine? XP needs 512mb minimum to run well.

I'm a speed freak. I have my ultimate computer, I use it like a mad man. Any slowdown and I'm disappointed. I use multiple desktops, each like it's an individual computer - I have buttons on each side of my mouse and I instinctively switch between them like changing thoughts.

While I don't have as many applications and tabs open as Alex or Flip, I do stress every part of my computer except the CPU :(.

It's just a feeling, but I fairly sure that my bottle neck is the Ram and the harddrive. I can't do much about the harddrive (I'm not buying a raptor - too loud), but I can do something about the Ram.

When I get back to Photoshopping I want nothing slowing me down.

Todays OSs are Ram hungry and I intend to feed them.

I am currently sitting at a pc with 192mb of ram. That's right, 192. There are probably people around that don't think that's possible. It's not the best one in the room, but it works (that is, it works if you can manage to get it going :P). I can play ut2004 on it, at least until the graphics make my eyes bleed (in a bad way). In fact, in desperation, I've debugged a decent sized program on it with visual studio 2005. Though that doesn't really count, because I know it started swapping then.

So tell me, how is 1gb holding yours back? With 3gb you'd have a whopping 16 times as much as I'm currently sitting in front of. Is volume rendering your new hobby or something? Freelancing for weta workshop perhaps? Or maybe you do lots of photoshoping, and you feel the need for a 1024x1024 picture with 512 layers (theoretically 2gb, if I did my math right). I just can't see it myself. Not yet...

By the way, my calculation only make the 4GB around $1300NZD.

That is:

USD$775.99 + USD$30.00 = USD$805.99 [Shipping]
USD$805.99 = NZD$1,176.113 [1/02/2007 1:00am]
NZD$1,176.113 + 12.5% = NZD$1,323.1271 [GST]

Am I missing some cost there or were you just rounding generously?

Using the same logic:

1GB: USD$217.99 + USD$30.00 + GST = NZD$ 407.10
2GB: USD$399.99 + USD$30.00 + GST = NZD$ 705.88
4GB: USD$775.99 + USD$30.00 + GST = NZD$1,323.13

Edit: your blog eats plus signs.

Wow comments. On my blog. Life is awesome.

There is no way I'm ever going to get my machine up to maximum capacity. It would cost around $6000.

Nada. That's just silly.

Fueling my fantasy to do such a thing by purchasing one each of the largest item that can fit in that slot I can do. I think I'm going to go with the 2gb extra. 3gb is enough these days, I can always get more. The 4gb option is 2 2gb chips (have to install in pairs).

I wake up at 7 in the morning, brush my teeth, walk to the bus stop, wait for the bus, get to work 20 minutes early, buy cookies for breakfast out of the snack box, eat said cookies, start work at 8, eat out at lunch, finish at 5, walk home for 45 minutes, read my rss feed, eat tea, play computer games or watch tv shows until too late, sleep. Rinse wash repeat. It's a living. Someone stole my bike. Twice. That's why I'm busing it.

Hamiltron welcomes visitors from the 21st century! Just make sure you come on a Friday or Saturday so we can make a night out of it. There is crash space here.

Hahah! I thought I couldn't post on your blog anymore.. So that's why I stopped commenting. Now I can.. Perplexing.

Anywayz.. (with a 'Z' even!) I say (in agreement with Alex) get two, you crazy bastard! Should be a most excellent setup, which it already is. My computer is still broken, so please feel free to point and laugh ;)

How you been lately anyway dude? I should be coming up to Hamiltron (city of the future) sometime soon to visit and drink and be merry with everyone. It's a total drag being isolated here in Rotovegas, working 9 to 5.. But I did just recently go on a kayaking/camping trip around Tarawera with Bex a weekend back, was pretty damn awesome, if not tiring.. Anyway keep in touch, laters dude!

You know you should really start filling it with 2GB chips if you plan to go up to your maximum capacity.

If you do decide to go with Crucial, I'll get mine at the same time to [maybe] cut down shipping (as insignificant as it is to the equation).
