Introducing: Karl

Hey hey!

Probably should have posted this before posting my Evil Dead Reneration post, but meh… What’s done is done :P.

Anyways, on with the intro:

Who am I…? Well, that’s an interesting question. I flat with Alex, Aimee and Tom; and that’s just the basic intro.

As with the others, I’m a Uni student at the same Uni, but unlike Alex, Aimee, Tom and Chang, I’m doing a Marketing Degree… Very different to their degrees :P Doesn’t mean I don’t like games though… In fact, I think I have the most games out of the lot of us, and play quite regularly… Mostly wishing I had the skills of Tom in First Person Shooters though (for the record: He’s really good).

As hinted at in my Evil Dead post, I’m an avid fan of Evil Dead, among other things; such as Warhammer, Terry Pratchett, Spinal Tap (shame on you if you’ve never heard of Spinal Tap), Star Wars/Trek, and other various interests in between. When not at Uni I’ll usually be found playing a game on my PC, or the Xbox…

Hmm… What else to say…? Kinda hard to answer questions about myself when I’m the only one asking, so I’ll leave it at that… Anything else you want to find out don’t feel shy to ask. Depending on the question, I’ll probably reply too :P

Evil Dead: Guns; Ghouls; Games

Well, having recently finished the new Evil Dead game; Evil Dead Regeneration, I can once again say that I am satisfied with this game. Which is kinda funny, since I’ve played all three Evil Dead games, and loved them all; but this doesn’t seem to be the general agreement within the gaming community.

And I’m not sure why…

For me, all three games (Hail to the King, Fistful of Boomstick and Regeneration) are very much similar in gameplay and style. All 3 are puzzle-based games revolving around Ash going from Dearborne Michigan through to some other time period, killing Deadites along the way. But for some reason Regeneration is being hailed as better than all the rest…

Sure, it’s got great graphics, and an awesome interplay between the characters. Not to mention the fact that the humour is right up there with the greatest one liners from Army of Darkness. But I personally haven’t found any reason to place it above the other games. To be honest though, I do think there is a bit more scope for replayability with Regeneration, but I doubt this is the reason…

What I do think is the reason that the gaming community seem to place Regeneration as being better than King, or Boomstick is that it has more of an Evil Dead Movie feel than the other two titles. Which I can agree with, since that is my view on the game. But I also feel that the “Movie Feel” is not due to the gameplay, but moreso the cutscenes, and the constant banter between Ash and Sam.

Comming soon: Comparisons of gameplay over the 3 titles; “Why I Find No Difference”

Macromedia Flash is crap

I did a bit more ‘haxing’ to let the authors name come up for each post as we now have more than one author on this here blog.

I’m going through my stuff making it a bit less ‘me’ and a bit more ‘us’…

I’m not looking forward to finishing the flash game that we have been working on for a good part of this semester. Every minute spent in flash makes me more and more angry and crazed, how can an expensive and professional piece of software that is used by so many be so frustrating and hard to use? If flash is the introduction that budding animators and programmers get to the world of computer development I feel sorry for them.

I’m finding it hard to get things done with constant interruptions, uni assignments and other things I’m required to do. Again Voodoo hasn’t been worked on for a while. I’ve decided to restart a bit and use a slightly different paradigm for the parser. It’s more like flex and bison now, but the scanner only returns 4 different types of tokens. Identifier, Number, Symbol and Literal (for string literals). The parser class asks the scanner for the next token, it returns and the scanner can be asked questions about the location and indentation of that token. The scanner can also be told that the last token it returned was bad and it will be able to print out it’s location.

So each individual parse method will be a lot smaller which will be good, and I will still be able to use the cool parser errors that using flex and bison won’t give me.

Edit: I’ve also fixed a problem with the /author pages, the authors name wasn’t coming up. I used a bit of a hack, but it works. I want to submit the bug report but the signup email is taking yonks.
